Every year people complain about how the Christmas displays show up in stores earlier and earlier. This year it's really gotten out of hand. Michaels, the arts and crafts store, has had Christmas merchandise on display since before Halloween. There's already Christmas music on the radio, and just now I was trying to find something to watch on TV and there were Christmas movies on three different channels. Thanksgiving isn't even until Thursday!
I really enjoy Christmas, myself; the decorations, the food, the corny old music, giving gifts, hoping against hope that this will finally be the year we have a Christmas snowfall. But the crass materialism has really taken the joy out of the holiday season. Seeing Christmas ornaments jammed alongside grotesque Halloween decor and hearing Bing Crosby for a full two months sort of makes the specialness of the holiday wear off long before the actual day. As my husband said yesterday, it's kind of like eating a turkey dinner every night for two months before Thanksgiving. By the time the date rolls around, all you feel is thankful that it's over.
